How VOLO Built a HIPAA-Aware Mobile App for Real-Time Prescription Management

Executive Summary

Client: Kydeca Inc.
Industry: HealthTech
Engagement: End-to-End Product Development (MVP Build)
Country: Canada

Project at a Glance

Kydeca partnered with VOLO to build ZipScripts, a mobile app that helps patients with chronic and post-COVID conditions manage prescriptions from home. The traditional process was slow and required multiple visits to the pharmacy. VOLO created a secure, easy-to-use MVP with Flutter and Python. Patients can now submit prescriptions through the app, check their status in real time, and avoid unnecessary travel. The result is a faster, safer, and more reliable way for people and pharmacies to stay connected.

About the Client

Kydeca Inc. is a Canadian HealthTech startup focused on making everyday healthcare more accessible through practical digital tools. Their flagship product, ZipScripts, lets patients scan prescriptions, request refills, schedule deliveries, and message their pharmacy from a single app. It connects users with licensed pharmacies of their choice, helping them save time and reduce visits while keeping personal data private and encrypted.

Created during the shift toward safer, low-contact healthcare, ZipScripts benefits both sides of the counter. Patients gain quick, convenient access to medication, and pharmacies can prepare orders in advance, improving efficiency and reducing waiting time for everyone.

The Challenge

Before ZipScripts, getting a prescription filled at the pharmacy was a slow, repetitive process for both patients and staff. Patients often had to call, wait, or visit in person, while pharmacists dealt with phone confirmations and long queues. This manual workflow caused frequent delays and frustration on both sides of the counter.

When the pandemic hit, these issues became more serious. Patients with chronic conditions still needed medication but had to limit face-to-face contact. Kydeca saw a chance to make the experience safer, faster, and easier for everyone involved.

Key Challenges

  • Give pharmacies one place to receive and manage requests.
  • Protect patient data with healthcare-grade security.
  • Make the interface accessible for users of all ages.
  • Deliver a test-ready MVP under tight time and resource constraints.

They approached VOLO with a request to release a working MVP that was clear, secure, and ready for real-world use within a short timeline

Our Solution

VOLO was engaged as a full-cycle technology partner, delivering a working MVP from concept to release. The focus was on usability, stability, and secure performance, ensuring ZipScripts met healthcare-grade reliability standards while remaining intuitive for everyday users.

Mobile App Development

Using Flutter, VOLO created one app for both Android and iOS. Patients can upload prescriptions, follow progress, and receive updates when their medication is ready. The interface is clean, readable, and designed for users with limited technical experience.

Backend and Data Management

The backend, written in Python and supported by Firebase, manages users, data, and live updates. RESTful APIs link the app and the pharmacy dashboard, keeping communication fast and secure. The system runs on cloud infrastructure that supports growth and future integrations.

Pharmacy Dashboard

VOLO built a web dashboard, so pharmacists can review incoming prescriptions, update status, and message patients from one screen. The setup replaces manual coordination with clear, traceable workflows.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

Each build was tested to confirm stability, performance, and data security across devices. VOLO prioritized healthcare compliance from the first sprint, applying strict data handling and privacy standards. This focus on quality helped the MVP meet healthcare requirements and stay on schedule.

Collaboration and Process

A six-person VOLO team handled development, design, QA, and project management. Working in short Agile sprints, they stayed aligned with Kydeca’s leadership through frequent reviews and direct feedback. This kept the project focused and on schedule.

The Impact

The ZipScripts MVP enabled Kydeca to enter the market with a validated product and early user traction. Patients now experience shorter wait times and safer, contactless access to medications, while pharmacies benefit from streamlined digital workflows.

The app’s secure and scalable architecture serves as a foundation for future integrations and partnerships with healthcare providers.
